Aunt Marie’s Broccoli Salad

by H2 on August 18, 2010

My great aunt Marie made the best broccoli salad. She would usually bring it to Christmas each year. I’ve had several version of broccoli salad in my day, but hers was always the best. She past away years ago and her recipe too so I thought. What a special surprise it was when my cousin Lisa included it in my wedding shower gift. It’s truly one of my most treasured recipes and one I most frequently get asked for.

Aunt Marie’s Broccoli Salad

1 large broccoli head (or 2 if they are small)
1/2 medium sized red  onion, chopped
1 package of bacon crumbled
1 cup of sunflower seeds

Mix above together

2 Tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup of sugar
1 cup of real mayonnaise

Mix these items three items together then combine both mixtures and chill until serving.

It’s been said before and I’ll say it again, Bacon Makes it Better!

When cutting broccoli be sure to cut it in to bite sized pieces. I use my small food processor to chop the red onion and crumble the bacon.

If preparing this the day before keep the two mixtures separate until you get ready to serve or travel so it doesn’t become soggy. I hope your family and friends enjoy it as much as mine do.
